Olympus Introduces M-XD1GM,
A New Type M-Series xD-Picture CardTM
High-Capacity
1GB Compact Memory Media for Digital Cameras
|
The
information contained in this news release applies only to the Japanese
market
Olympus Imaging Corp. (President:
Hiroshi Komiya) announces the introduction
of the new Type M-series xD-Picture CardTM, an advanced memory media
designed for ultra-compact digital cameras. With a data-storage capacity of
1GB, the M-XD1GM card has the largest memory in the xD-Picture
CardTM range to date. It is scheduled
to go on saletoward
the end of March 2005.
The M-XD1GM Type M-series xD-Picture
CardTM uses the latest high-capacity
storage technology (based on the Multi-Level Cell (MLC*)) to pack 1GB of
memory on to an ultra-compact media card measuring just 25.0 (W) x20.0 (H)
x1.7mm (D) in size. All the members of the xD-Picture
CardTM Type M series are being
developed using this advanced technology.
The
M-XD1GM enables users to take and store approximately 500 shots averaging
an image size of 8 megapixels with an Olympus digital still camera in HQ mode (the default
high-quality image setting). The card features high-speed data-transfer
capabilities, generating speeds of up to 4.0MB/s for reading and 2.5MB/s
for writing.
The development of advanced
video-recording functions in digital still cameras as the number of pixels
increases is driving demand for digital camera memory media with greater
data-storage capacities. Olympus plans to
apply this high-capacity memory technology to develop the xD-Picture Card? range for Olympus digital cameras
further, and expects to develop cards in the future with memory capacities
of up to 8GB.@

FUJIFILM UNVEILS 1GB
xD-PICTURE CARD TYPE M
Obtaining 1GB capacity, new architecture optimized for next generation
cameras
PMA Booths #3502 & #3508
www.fujifilm.com/pma
Valhalla, NY, February 14, 2005 - Fuji Photo Film
U.S.A., Inc., a leading supplier of imaging and information solutions,
today announced the April availability of the Fujifilm 1GB xD-Picture CardTM
Type M and will unveil the new card design at their booth at the
Photographic Marketing Association (PMA) show in Orlando, Florida. This new
flash memory card utilizes Multi Level Cell (MLC) architecture, a new
high-density flash memory technology. This advances the technology
introduced in traditional xD-Picture Cards to
provide a convenient aftermarket product for next generation cameras.
The 1GB xD-Picture CardTM Type M architecture was chosen to
take advantage of next generation camera characteristics, and are completely compatible with all 2005 models of
Fujifilm digital cameras.
"Consumers are now very comfortable with digital
photography and are demanding increased capacity while maintaining quality
of the image," noted Bill Drysdale, Vice
President, Digital Devices, Fuji Photo Film U.S.A, Inc. "Consumers
want to take a lot of images, make high-quality prints to store and share -
and they want it at a good price point."
At 1GB, the Fujifilm xD-Picture
Card can approximately hold more than 1300, 600 and 400 images at 3, 6 and
12 megapixels, respectively. The technology
highlights Fujifilm's focus on maximizing photographic storage with minimal
space/cost for today's most advanced compact digital cameras.
Currently one of the smallest, lightest flash memory
cards available, the xD-Picture Card format is
comparable in size to a penny, measuring just 0.79" x 0.98" x
0.07" and weighing less than one-tenth of an ounce.
Fujifilm xD-Picture Cards
are now available in storage capacities from 64 MB to 1GB, with capacity
expected to reach 8GB on a single card in the near future.
Consumer-driven technology
Consumers are taking more digital images than ever. Because of the need for
increased capacity in a small form factor, Fujifilm and Olympus
scientists have integrated high density MLC (Multi Level Cell) memory
technology into the new xD architecture to make
it possible to pack 1GB into an ultra-compact card.
First launched in September 2002 in conjunction with Olympus, the xD-Picture
Card technology has a capacity potential of 8GB. Fujifilm will continue to
boost the performance of the xD-Picture CardTM to meet the trend for increasingly
high-resolution digital cameras and the diversification of shooting styles.
The new Fujifilm 1GB xD-Picture
Card Type M is compatible with most USB card reader/writers, allowing
digital images on the card to be read directly via a computer USB port
without requiring a connection to a digital camera. When an xD-Picture Card is inserted into any of these
reader/writers, the card essentially becomes a portable hard drive for easy
transfer of images, data, and voice files from one computer to the next.
Some readers/writers may require firmware upgrades to take advantage of
this capability.

Olympus Optical Co., Ltd.
OLYMPUS INTRODUCES
NEW 1GB XD-PICTURE CARD
DIGITAL
CAMERA STORAGE MEDIA
Summary
Olympus Corporation (President: Tsuyoshi Kikukawa)
and Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd., (President: Shigetaka
Komori) are pleased to announce the development of ultra-compact M-XD1GM
one-gigabyte xD-Picture Card digital camera
storage media. The new M-XD1GM cards are the highest capacity xD-Picture Cards yet developed, and are scheduled to go
on sale in the first quarter of 2005.
The new M-XD1GM xD-Picture Cards
employ MLC (Multi Level Cell) technology* to achieve a maximum capacity of
1GB. When shooting photos with an Olympus
digital camera set to HQ mode (the default image-quality setting), a 1GB
M-XD1GM xD-Picture Card can hold approximately
500 8-megapixel images. M-XD1GM xD-Picture Cards
are currently the most compact (W20mm x H25mm x D1.7mm) digital camera
storage media to offer 1GB capacity.
* The final "M" of the xD-Picture
Card product code indicates that the card utilizes high-capacity MLC
technology.
Demand for higher storage capacities continues to grow as
digital camera image sensor resolutions and movie-shooting capabilities
increase. In the future, Olympus
anticipates that the high-capacity technology employed on the M-XD1GM card
will enable the development of xD-Picture Cards
that offer capacities as high as 8GB.
* Use of M-XD1GM xD-Picture Cards will be
supported by all future Olympus digital
cameras. However, because the cards utilize advanced new technology,
previously released digital cameras will either require a firmware update
or be unable to support the new cards. Detailed information will be posted
on the Olympus website prior to the
M-XD1GM xD-Picture Card's market introduction.
